Garmin nuvi 2. 79. LMT review GPS Tracklog. The 7 Garmin nuvi 2. LMTHands on 7 Garmin nuvi 2. LMT review. The Garmin nvi 2. LMT is the companys first 7 navigator outside of their dezl line for truckers. As a matter of fact, the hardware seems identical to the dezl 7. LMT although the dezl does have a different mount. The 2. 79. 7LMT is also the top of the line model in Garmins 2. Advanced series. Improvements in this years models include active lane guidance, traffic announcements, Real Directions and the slide out Up Ahead feature. Ill explore each of those features in more detail below. As a high end model, the 2. LMT includes maps of the US, Canada and Mexico, as well as lifetime traffic and map updates, Bluetooth for hands free calling and voice command. UPDATE Heres a feature I initially missed it turns out that all 2. LMT and LT models have ad free traffic. Related units. Step up to the dezl 7. LMT to get a backup camera input, a headphone jack, specialized truck routing and other truck specific features. Drop down to the 2. LMT for the same feature set as the 2. LMT on a still generous 5 screen. Or keep the 7 screen with the 2. LM but youll lose the Bluetooth, voice command and live traffic features. To see how the 2. LMT stacks up against other models, check out my Garmin nuvi comparison chart. Size matters. Below you can see three nuvis for size comparison the 7 2. LMT, the 5 2. 59. LMT and the 4. 3 2. LMT. Size comparison of 7, 5 and 4. Garmin nuvis. Seven inches makes for a big navigator. It didnt overwhelm my Honda Accord, but I sure wouldnt want it in anything smaller, and I dont think Id want this for everyday use. But if you have a full size pickup or a van, this might be a good choice for you. If you have an RV, or anything large enough to worry about bridge clearances, etc., you might want to look at the dezl 7. LMT. Map differences. While the differences arent always as dramatic as shown below, the 2. LMT often displays more information andor a larger area than the 2. LMTThe 5 2. 59. LMT map screen top vs. LMT bottomPowered mount. Ill also note that the 2. LMT has a powered mount, unlike the 4. Advanced series. You can see it in the image belowGarmin nuvi 2. LMT rear and powered mount. And while I prefer to use a friction dashboard mount, I found the windshield suction mount to be very secure. I had no trouble with the 7 2. LMT mounted using either method. New features. Active lane guidance. One of nicest new features on the 2. Advanced and Prestige series nuvis is active lane guidance. There was some concern that this would be inferior to the old lane assist feature, but rest assured, the new one is clearly superior. While it is true that the lane guidance doesnt always show up in the next maneuver indicator, consider the image below where the vehicle is approaching two different exits. The new system does a much better job at showing which exit to take. Active lane guidance. Heres a video Ive posted showing active lane guidance in action. Traffic announcements. The 2. 79. 7LMT will announce if there is traffic on the route, what the expected delay is and if there is a faster route, similar to Tom. Toms approach. There are settings allowing you to control how frequently you hear such announcements. Sample traffic display on the nuvi 2. LMTWhile I did not do extensive testing in traffic, I did hear the unit say light traffic on your route, with the screen showing on fastest route see image above. Another time it said something to the effect of there are seven minutes of delay, you are on the fastest route. I will say that it nailed the incident shown above both where it started and where it ended. Next turn and the street you are on. As you can see in the image above, the 2. LMT shows the street you are currently travelling on at the bottom of the screen unlike previous nuvis and the next turn at the top of the screen. When you are not actively navigating the top bar shows the next cross street you are approaching. Up ahead. You can see the slide out Up Ahead menu in the screenshot below. Tap one of the icons to get a list of upcoming gas stations, banksATMs and restaurants. Unlike last years Exit Services feature, this feature alerts you to upcoming POIs on surface street routes as well. The three menu items and their order can be customized by tapping one of the icons and then tapping the wrench icon. Additional options include parking, rest areas, lodging and custom search for a business name or category. Note the X to close the Up Ahead menu. Slide out up ahead feature. You open the Up Ahead feature by tapping the menu icon in the bottom right corner of the map screen, and selecting it from the menu shown below. The items shown in this menu can be customized as well. Additional options include detour, brightness and a trip data slide out menu also customizable from Settings Map Vehicle Map Tools. All seven options can be included if desired. And since the Detour button doesnt show up on the main menu, Id suggest adding it hereGarmin nuvi 2. 79. LMT map tools menu. Real Directions. This feature tells you to turn at a landmark rather than a street name although the street name is still shown on the screen. Its only available in a limited number of markets 5. February. I heard it a couple of times during a quick trip to Atlanta, where it said turn right at the traffic light and turn left at the Holiday Inn. A little voice bubble shows up on the screen at junctions with this featureReal Directions. Heres a video of it from GPS City. School zone warnings. Warnings such as the one below appear along with a chime when you approach a school zone. School zone warning. Missing feature Dashboards. One item Garmin took away in order to show the road you are currently on, is the selectable dashboards feature. This allowed you to add more data fields to the map screen, such as elevation, remaining travel time, etc. Now youll need to use the slide out trip data feature if you want such information. Returning features. Of course the nuvi 2. LMT covers all the basics, such as calling out street names for turns, lifetime traffic and map updates Additionally, youll find trip planner multi destination routing, custom avoidances, Where Am I, voice command which continues to work very well, photo realistic junction view, route choices, extensive Where To customization options, and trip log. Smartphone Link is now available for i. Phones or Android phones, and the detour by road feature is now available when you tap the detour button. Bluetooth. Bluetooth sound quality was actually pretty good, much better than on the 2. LMT. The nuvi paired easily with my Samsung Galaxy Nexus and was able to access my phone book and call history. But there seems to be some sort of software bug while I was able to receive calls I could not to dial out using the nuvi. Since this probably isnt hardware related, Im hoping Garmin will quickly fix it. Bluetooth menu. Performance. I noticed no routing errors, sluggish performance, lock ups or shut downs during a month of testing the 2. LMT. Garmin nuvi 2. LMT pros. 7 screen. Powered mount. Lifetime maps and traffic. Traffic announcements. Active lane guidance. Up ahead feature. Customization options. Excellent voice command functionality. Garmin nuvi 2. 79. LMT cons. Bluetooth bug prevents dialing out from nuvi. Conclusion and recommendation. This 7 model is a welcome addition to the nuvi line and Im going to cautiously recommend it. If it wasnt for the Bluetooth issue I might deem it the best nuvi yet. Hopefully that will be fixed with a firmware update in the near future. In addition to the giant screen, the most notable improvements are active lane guidance, the up ahead feature and traffic announcements. More Garmin nuvi 2. LMT reviews. Ill be posting more hands on GPS reviews as they appear, but in the meantime, here are some Other Garmin nuvi 2. LMT resources. Compare prices on the Garmin nuvi 2. LMT at these merchants.

Data Open Blog The New York Times. The New York Times publishes over 3. Refining the path our readers take through this content personalizing the placement of articles on our apps and website can help readers find information relevant to them, such as the right news at the right times, personalized supplements to major events and stories in their preferred multimedia format. In this post, Ill discuss our recent work revamping The New York Timess article recommendation algorithm, which currently serves behind the Recommended for You section of NYTimes. History. Content based filtering. News recommendations must perform well on fresh content breaking news that hasnt been viewed by many readers yet. Thus, the article data available at publishing time can be useful the topics, author, desk and associated keyword tags of each article. Our first recommendation engine used these keyword tags to make recommendations. Using tags for articles and a users 3. Because this technique relies on a content model, its part of a broader class of content based recommendation algorithms. Description. Hubstaff is quickly becoming one of the leading solutions in the evolving time tracking space. We are looking for a talented Ruby on Rails engineer to. The approach has intuitive appeal If a user read ten articles tagged with the word Clinton, they would probably like future Clinton tagged articles. And this technique performs as well on fresh content as it does on older content, since it relies on data available at the time of publishing. However, this method relies on a content model that, sometimes, has unintended effects. Because the algorithm weights tags by their rareness within a corpus, rare tags have a large effect. This works well most of the time, but occasionally degrades the user experience. For instance, one reader noted that while she was interested in same sex pieces, occasionally in the Weddings section, she was being recommended wedding coverage about heterosexual couples. This is because a low frequency tag, Weddings and Engagements, was in an article previously clicked, outweighing all other tags that may have been more applicable for that reader. Collaborative Filtering. To accommodate the shortcomings of the previous method, we tested collaborative filtering. Collaborative filters surface articles based on what similar readers have read in our case, similarity was determined by reading history. This approach is also appealing If one readers preferences are very similar to another readers, articles that the first reader reads might interest the second, and vice versa. However, this approach fails at recommending newly published, unexplored articles articles that were relevant to groups of readers but hadnt yet been read by any reader in that group. A collaborative filter might also, hypothetically, cluster reading patterns in narrow viewpoints. Current Approach. It turns out that straddling both techniques can give us the best of both worlds. We built an algorithm inspired by a technique, Collaborative Topic Modeling CTM, that 1 models content, 2 adjusts this model by viewing signals from readers, 3 models reader preference and 4 makes recommendations by similarity between preference and content. Overview. Our algorithm starts by modeling each article as a mixture of the topics it addresses. We can think of a topic as an unobserved theme, like Politics or Environment, that affects the words observed in the article. For example, if an article is about the environment, wed expect words like tree or conservation. We model each reader based on their topic preferences. We can then recommend articles based on how closely their topics match a readers preferred topics. As an example, we run our algorithm supposing that all New York Times articles published in the last month can be represented as a combination of two topics. Under these constraints, the algorithm identifies these topics, roughly, as Politics and Art. Our algorithm finds an article, America Deepens its Footprint in Iraq Once More, as 1. Politics, and a film review by A. O. Scott as 1. 00 Art. It labels mixtures, too for example, an article about art politics, Frick Museum Abandons Contested Renovation Plan, is labeled 5. Politics, 5. 0 Art. In this PoliticsArt space, we might describe our articles in the following manner Next, suppose that one reader prefers to read about Art 6. Politics 4. 0 of the time. We might represent that reader with the red x. The magical part is that they are spatially close to articles that align with their interests, even if they havent read them yet we recommend articles that are closest to them in the space. There are further questions for us to answer. Can this topic space capture ambiguous word usage And how do we best observe the preferences of our readers Clicks are, after all, not robust Im sure that at some point, you have clicked on something you didnt enjoy and missed something you would have found interesting. We tested many options carefully the algorithm we built brings us closer to addressing some of these questions, and gives us a powerful new way to understand The New York Times. This is a three part challenge Part 1 How to model an article based on its text. Part 2 How to update the model based on audience reading patterns. Part 3 How to describe readers based on their reading history. Part 1 How to model an article based on its text. First, our algorithm looks at the body of each article and applies Latent Dirichlet Allocation LDA, a content modeling algorithm. LDA learns the mixture of topics in each article A topic is formally defined as a distribution over a vocabulary. If a document has a certain topic weighted highly, the words seen in the article are more likely to be words weighted highly under this topic. LDA is quick, accurate for our purposes and capable of online inference or learning topics in real time as new articles are published. LDA topics tend to be broad some examples are Middle East, Film and Healthcare, which allows us to relate pieces from differing viewpoints. LDA is based on a graphical model, which can easily be extended to incorporate new assumptions and information. In our case, we extend our model to model not only the text of an article, but also the specific readers reading that article, described in the next section. Part 2 How to update the model based on audience reading patterns. LDA takes words as input, but words are often ambiguous Context, style and voice can adjust their meaning. For example, if Gail Collins writes a piece with the words dog, car and roof, can we tell that shes being allegorical, and not just writing about animals and automobiles Indeed, a purely LDA based approach gives weight to travel, placing her piece at the blue point in the diagram below. However, a large sample of readers reading the piece have also read pieces about Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz visualized for illustration at the red xs, so wed like our algorithm to adjust it to the green point in the Politics topic. By adding offsets to model topic error, as described in the CTM paper, our algorithm incorporates reading patterns on top of content modeling to create a hybrid approach. The CTM algorithm works by iteratively adjusting offsets and then recalculating reader scores. It runs until there is little change in either. A randomly chosen subset of readers, called our training sample, gives us the information we need. We tested two methods for calculating offsets 1 CTM and 2 an approach called Collaborative Poisson Factorization. In online AB testing, we found CTM to perform better. Part 3 How to describe readers based on their reading history. The methods used for adjusting article topics also calculate reader preference, but they cant scale to all our users. Therefore, we needed a quick way to calculate reader preferences, which can occur after finalizing article topics. A simple approach would be to average together the topics of all articles youve read If youve clicked on one article that is 4. Politics, 6. 0 Art and another that is 6. Politics, 4. 0 Art, youre. PoliticsArt topic space. However, this assumes that clicks perfectly indicate preference. What if you clicked on an article you didnt like, or missed one you would have One way to approach this is to back off a bit, and say that you only 9. This leaves room for mistaken clicks or missed gems. In this diagram, the green dots represent articles a reader has read, and the red dots represent ones they havent. Firearms manufacturer Sig Sauer is offering a voluntary upgrade to owners of its P3. Per CNBC, Sig Sauer admitted on Tuesday that dropping the pistols could cause an unintentional discharge and said it has developed a number of enhancements in function, reliability and overall safety including drop performance. The company said it will announce by August 1. The company gave no indication whether anyone was wounded or killed as a result of the design defect, though the Trace reported the Dallas Police Department has already pulled it from service, and one Stamford, Connecticut police officer has sued for 7 million after allegedly dropping a P3. Two drop tests conducted by gun enthusiast sites, The Truth About Guns and retailer Omaha Outdoors blog, show exactly what can happen if you slip up when holding a P3. While TTAGs test found that when they dropped the gun from a height of around 4 4. Omaha Outdoors blog post warned the gun could accidentally discharge when dropped from below waist level. The discharges occurred across several models of the P3. ACP rounds. Firearms experts universally emphasize gun owners should always assume a gun could discharge at any time and act accordingly, even when its safety is on or whoever is holding it believes it is unloaded. But the P3. 20 was marketed as a next gen firearm which could never go wrong. Previously, Sig Sauer had told TTAG it had full confidence in the reliability, durability and safety of its striker fired handgun platform, and insisted all models of the P3. Sig Sauers website describes the pistol as Innovative. Modular. Safe. Weve designed safety elements into every necessary feature on this pistol, the sites promotional copy reads. From the trigger, to the striker and even the magazine, the P3. You know, unless you drop it. Sig Sauer was quick to tell CNBC the M1. P3. 20 it just sold to the US Army as its new service pistol for 5. So that all sounds well and good, and probably shouldnt be given second thought by anyone at all. CNBC. Devon Wikipedia. Devon, also known as Devonshire, which was formerly its common and official name, is a county of England, reaching from the Bristol Channel in the north to the English Channel in the south. It is part of South West England, bounded by Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the northeast, and Dorset to the east. The City of Exeter is the county town seven other districts of East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge, and West Devon are under the jurisdiction of Devon County Council Plymouth and Torbay are each a part of Devon but administered as unitary authorities. 3 Combined as a ceremonial county, Devons area is 6,7. Devon derives its name from Dumnonia, which, during the British Iron Age, Roman Britain, and Early Medieval was the homeland of the Dumnonii. Brittonic Celts. The Anglo Saxon settlement of Britain resulted in the partial assimilation of Dumnonia into the Kingdom of Wessex during the eighth and ninth centuries. The western boundary with Cornwall was set at the River Tamar by King thelstan in 9. Devon was constituted as a shire of the Kingdom of England thereafter. This page provides lists of bestselling individual books and book series to date and in any language. Best selling refers to the estimated number of copies sold of. The north and south coasts of Devon each have both cliffs and sandy shores, and the countys bays contain seaside resorts, fishing towns, and ports. The inland terrain is rural, generally hilly, and has a low population density in comparison to many other parts of England. Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England at 9. To the north of Dartmoor are the Culm Measures and Exmoor. In the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon the soil is more fertile, drained by rivers including the Exe, the Culm, the Teign, the Dart, and the Otter. As well as agriculture, much of the economy of Devon is linked with tourism. The comparatively mild climate, coastline and landscape give rise to Devon as a destination for recreation and leisure in England, with visitors particularly attracted to the Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks its coasts, including the resort towns along the south coast known collectively as the English Riviera, the Jurassic Coast, and North Devons UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the countryside including the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. HistoryeditToponymyeditThe name Devon derives from the name of the Britons who inhabited the southwestern peninsula of Britain at the time of the Roman conquest of Britain known as the Dumnonii, thought to mean deep valley dwellers from proto Celticdubnos deep. In the Brittonic, Devon is known as Welsh Dyfnaint, Breton Devnent and Cornish Dewnens, each meaning deep valleys. For an account of Celtic Dumnonia, see the separate article. William Camden, in his 1. Britannia, described Devon as being one part of an older, wider country that once included Cornwall THAT region which, according to the Geographers, is the first of all Britaine, and, growing straiter still and narrower, shooteth out farthest into the West,. was in antient time inhabited by those Britans whom Solinus called Dumnonii, Ptolomee Damnonii. For their habitation all over this Countrey is somewhat low and in valleys, which manner of dwelling is called in the British tongue Dan munith, in which sense also the Province next adjoyning in like respect is at this day named by the Britans Duffneit, that is to say, Low valleys. But the Country of this nation is at this day divided into two parts, knowen by later names of Cornwall and Denshire,.  William Camden, Britannia. 6The term Devon is normally used for everyday purposes e. Devon County Council but Devonshire continues to be used in the names of the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment and The Devonshire Association. One erroneous theory is that the shire suffix is due to a mistake in the making of the original letters patent for the Duke of Devonshire, resident in Derbyshire. However, there are references to Defenascire in Anglo Saxon texts from before 1. AD this would mean Shire of the Devonians,7 which translates to modern English as Devonshire. The term Devonshire may have originated around the 8th century, when it changed from Dumnonia Latin to Defenascir. 8Human occupationeditKents Cavern in Torquay had produced human remains from 3. Dartmoor is thought to have been occupied by Mesolithichunter gatherer peoples from about 6. BC. The Romans held the area under military occupation for around 3. Later, the area began to experience Saxon incursions from the east around 6. AD, firstly as small bands of settlers along the coasts of Lyme Bay and southern estuaries and later as more organised bands pushing in from the east. Devon became a frontier between Brittonic and Anglo Saxon. Wessex, and it was largely absorbed into Wessex by the mid 9th century. A genetic study carried out by the University of Oxford University College London discovered separate genetic groups in Cornwall and Devon, not only were there differences on either side of the Tamar, with a division almost exactly along the modern county boundary dating back to the 6th Century9 but also between Devon and the rest of Southern England, and similarities with the modern northern France, including Brittany. This suggests the Anglo Saxon migration into Devon was limited rather than a mass movement of people. 1. The border with Cornwall was set by King thelstan on the east bank of the River Tamar in 9. AD. Danish raids also occurred sporadically along many coastal parts of Devon between around 8. AD and just before the time of the Norman conquest, including the silver mint at Hlidaforda. Lydford in 9. 97 and Taintona a settlement on the Teign estuary in 1. Devon has also featured in most of the civil conflicts in England since the Norman conquest, including the Wars of the Roses, Perkin Warbecks rising in 1. Prayer Book Rebellion of 1. English Civil War. The arrival of William of Orange to launch the Glorious Revolution of 1. Brixham. Devon has produced tin, copper and other metals from ancient times. Devons tin miners enjoyed a substantial degree of independence through Devons Stannary Parliament, which dates back to the 1. The last recorded sitting was in 1. Economy and industryeditLike neighbouring Cornwall to the west, historically Devon has been disadvantaged economically compared to other parts of Southern England, owing to the decline of a number of core industries, notably fishing, mining and farming. Agriculture has been an important industry in Devon since the 1. The 2. 00. 1 UK foot and mouth crisis harmed the farming community severely. 1. Since then some parts of the agricultural industry have begun to diversify and recover, with a strong local food sector and many artisan producers. Nonetheless in 2. Plymouth hosts the head office and first ever store of The Range, the only major national retail chain headquartered in Devon. Since the rise of seaside resorts with the arrival of the railways in the 1. Devons economy has been heavily reliant on tourism. The countys economy followed the declining trend of British seaside resorts since the mid 2.
